Two steps to solve for x.
Think of an equation as a balanced scale. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
Written mini lessonUndo addition first.
In 3x + 5 = 20, subtract 5 from both sides. Now 3x = 15.
Undo multiplication.
3x means 3 × x. Divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5.
Check your answer.
Put 5 into the original equation: 3 × 5 + 5 = 20. Both sides match.

4x + 3 = 19
What is x? Try the steps before looking.
Show the answer and steps
Subtract 3 from both sides: 4x = 16.
Divide both sides by 4: x = 4.
Check: 4 × 4 + 3 = 19. It works!
