Think of an equation as a balanced scale. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
Written mini lessonIn 3x + 5 = 20, subtract 5 from both sides. Now 3x = 15.
3x means 3 × x. Divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5.
Put 5 into the original equation: 3 × 5 + 5 = 20. Both sides match.
YOUR TURN
What is x? Try the steps before looking.
Subtract 3 from both sides: 4x = 16.
Divide both sides by 4: x = 4.
Check: 4 × 4 + 3 = 19. It works!
FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS
Try asking, “What do you know already?” Let your learner explain one step, then give them space to try the next.
These lessons are designed to support classroom learning. Start with the skill your child needs, and follow the methods their teacher expects.
